Root Management Services

The roots of the tree are the means by which the tree obtains water and nutrients; they also provide anchorage of the tree in the soil. Both of these functions are essential for a healthy, stable tree.
Tree roots are easily damaged by: Changes in soil level; Trenching; Soil compaction; Drought and Erosion. Tree roots can also be problematic, sometimes causing damage to footpaths, walls and underground services. If we wish to protect trees, and protect infrastructure, it is essential to start with the roots.
At Frontier Tree Services we provide the following root management services:
Root Location
Using the Tree Radar Unit (TRU) we are able to locate roots underground without digging. The TRU is a novel application of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), a technology which has been proven over 30 years of use worldwide. TRU however has been specifically adapted for location of tree roots and is the only technology currently available that is designed for this purpose. We have found this technology incredibly useful for establishing not only the location of roots, but also their depth. This information is invaluable to architects, engineers and builders as it can give them specific information on where to dig, trench and build without damaging valuable tree root systems.
Installation of Root Barriers
Used to direct roots away from valuable hard landscaping and/or buildings.
Root Pruning
Often necessary for the installation of Root Barriers, root pruning is also often required on development sites where digging is essential within the designated Root Protection Area. In these cases it is advisable to use a professional arborist who has been trained, and is experienced in these techniques.
Soil Injection Treatments
Stress in trees is often related to compaction of soil, which leads to drastically reduced levels of water, nutrients and oxygen. A soil injection not only adds water and nutrients to the root layer of the soil, it also aerates the soil as part of the process.
Mulch supply and application
In these drought affected times, mulching is a real benefit for trees. Mulch reduces evaporation of water from the soil as well as acting as a (very) slow release organic fertilizer, it also has the added benefit of suppressing weed growth (and therefore eliminating competition), and regulating soil temperature.
Watering System Installation Advice
Our knowledge of tree root physiology will ensure that your tree watering system is installed correctly, maximizing the benefits for your trees.
